Theoretical Physics Research

The research interests of the Institute for Theoretical Physics lie in the area of non-linear physics and hierarchical modelbuilding. We apply the methods and concepts of non-linear dynamics to semiconductor physics, quantum optics and quantum electronics, soft condensed matter and biological physics.

Statistical physics forms the link between microscopic and macroscopic physics. Using its tools, we develop and study a hierarchy of models bridging wide temporal and spatial scales, from microscopic many-body theory, to macroscopic self-organisation, and to the control of complex non-linear systems. This contributes significantly to the TU Science Faculty's special research efforts in nanomaterials, optics and photonics, and soft matter, which are also supported by the disciplines of solid-state physics, optics, theoretical chemistry and biophysical chemistry.

The cooperation with external institutes such as the Fritz-Haber-Institut (FHI), Max-Born-Institut (MBI), Weierstrass-Institut (WIAS), Hahn-Meitner-Institut (HMI) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is a strategic cornerstone of the methodological diversity of the ITP.
